Meet a Greeniversity teacher

Name: SophieJob: Co-creator of the Green Backyard (GBY)

It won’t be a surprise to anyone that knows the Green Backyard’s (GBY) Sophie Antonelli that she is a Greeniversity Teacher. Along with her father and help from volunteers she has turned a scrap piece of land into a community growing project, which is located on London road (near the Apex flats) in Peterborough.

We asked Sophie a few questions about becoming a Greeniversity teacher.

What made you want to become a Greeniversity teacher?

“When I heard about Greeniversity, I knew instantly that I wanted to become involved. It didn’t strike me at first that I would be teacher material - I had totally forgotten that I had skills that I could share with others.”

Did you have any concerns about being a teacher?

”My first thoughts were, I don’t know how to teach, I have no training or qualifications and I have little time for lengthy courses. I was put at ease by Karen, the Greeniversity project officer, that these things didn’t matter and they could provide support for me to develop my skills as a teacher.”

What will be your first task as a Greeniversity teacher?

“I have persuaded volunteers from the GBY to share their skills with others and become Greeniversity teachers to. They will be offering a range of courses including the exciting African beat drumming.”

What will you be teaching?

”I’ll start with how to make a planet friendly lip balm. But the Green Backyard has given me many skills that I would love to share, for example, composting, pond building, growing vegetables, planting orchards, making cider and the cycles of natural planting.”
