Greeniversity Goes Nordic Walking 28.02.2010
Saturday 27th February. Woodfield Park. Nordic Walking.
Sue Burnett, a ski trainer for many years, brought Nordic Walking to the Greeniversity’s ever growing list of activities.
The event was well attended and dignified by the attendance of the Evening Telegraph. Nordic Walking was developed in Finland in the early part of the last century as a means of keeping fit when the option for skiing vanished in the Summer and it was this aspect that Sue demonstrated. The regimen has the advantage over normal walking by allowing the upper body to be involved with the aid of light weight, hand held poles that help propel the walker along with a resulting calorie burn off of forty seven percent more than conventional walking. Whilst this was only a taster course those involved could see the benefits of the technique in an overall fitness programme and there was interest in pursuing the activity further.
The Greeniversity offers a diverse range of courses held by skilled teachers. They range from skinning and preparing rabbit, growing honey on the bee-keeping course to a new way of walking. All the courses are free, fun and easy to access by registering on the website at www.greeniversity.org.uk.
