Brian Pearce met me at the gates to Peterborough’s Wildlife Haven and, within a few steps, the massive amount of work that has been achieved solely by volunteer workers was apparent. The environment and sustainability are at the heart of Brian’s vision of this nearly ‘secret’ garden almost in the heart of the city. Obviously not at its blooming best at this almost Christmas time of year its structure and concept has led to an intriguing oasis of calm. Pools, waterfalls and wildflower planting combine with carefully conserved reminders of the attempts at power production of the past to bring attention to the fact that our energy demands must co-exist with nature. An incredibly sculptural wind turbine from the 1960’s vies with a nineteenth century Belgian steam electricity generator for visual impact amongst the strong planting of trees that surrounds the complex of ‘low impact’ buildings that form the core of the environmental centre. The Exhibition Hall, powered by a Microsoft donated wind turbine, solar panel combination holds the ‘star’ attraction; a huge rotating World Globe that shows our planet in a way that maps cannot do and hints at the fragility of our world in the vast expanse of the universe. The Wildlife Haven faces the river Nene and is connected by a bridge to the second part of the environmental awareness strategy that is currently Railworld but scheduled to become TransEco; a concept that will promote sustainable transport solutions and ideas due to be active by 2012. With a firm view of the promotion of a greener more sustainable future and the need for education to take a front seat Brian was enthusiastic about the principles behind Greeniversity and was more than happy to contribute by providing a superb teaching venue for ‘Green’ skills. In Brian Pearce and his team Peterborough truly has a ‘Green’ champion.
